JENNIFER WESTWOOD

Mezzo-soprano

JENNIFER WESTWOOD graduated from Birmingham University with first class honours (French) and then studied with Honor Sheppard at the Royal Northern College of Music. Awarded the RNCM`s Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Musical Performance, she has continued her training at the Britten-Pears School, Aldeburgh and with Michelle Wegwart. During her time in Manchester, Jennifer was a member of the BBC Daily Service Singers.

Jennifer performs her oratorio repertoire throughout the UK with performances in Messiah, Elijah, Rossini`s Petite Messe Solennelle, Dvorak`s Stabat Mater and Verdi`s Requiem having been particularly well received. International concerts have taken her as far as Hong Kong where she sang the Angel in The Dream of Gerontius. She has toured Finland and Germany: Vivaldi`s Gloria, Rossini`s Petite Messe Solennelle, Dvorak`s Biblical Songs. She has also performed a programme of sacred music by Haydn with the Lindsay String Quartet in their Music in the Round series.

Operatic appearances under the musical direction of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, James Levine and Daniel Barenboim include the Bayreuth Festival (Lehrbube, Edeldame), the Salzburg Easter Festival and theatres in France, Monte Carlo and Germany. She has toured in Lakme (Miss Benson) and with Opera North (Aldeburgh Festival) and has appeared in concert performances of Carmen (Carmen) and The Magic Flute (3rd Lady). Her other roles include Lucretia, Begbick (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) and Cornelia (Giulio Cesare). Jennifer has sung with touring companies in the UK and Ireland and at the Buxton Festival where she also gave a lunchtime recital. She has been offered work with The Royal Opera, English National Opera and Welsh National Opera.  

As a recital artist, Jennifer has a repertoire ranging from Elizabethan music to Gershwin with classical guitarist John Byrne. With piano she has performed varied programmes of Lieder and French and Spanish Song. Her joint recitals of Dvorak Songs (Biblical Songs, Gypsy Songs etc.) with her husband, tenor Martin Hindmarsh have been a great success and they have other programmes to offer in addition to their many joint oratorio appearances.

In the past, Jennifer has worked with musical theatre coach Mary Hammond and took over the title role in the musical Jeanne d`Arc from Joanna Riding. She enjoys performing highlights from the Broadway and West End repertoire.

Jennifer speaks French and German, some Italian and loves to dance. She is a former Intervarsity Latin American Dance champion.
