The Britten Singers are managed by Jolyon Dodgson through Northern Voices. They are based in Manchester in the North of England. From here they travel to all the major UK festivals, to Western Europe and beyond - to Poland, Turkey, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia ...

It was as a broadcasting choir, the BBC Northern Singers, that the Britten Singers were originally formed, and since the 1950's they have been acknowledged as one of the world's leading professional chamber choirs. Until 1991, their first commitment has naturally been to radio and television. However, as the independent Britten Singers, they are free to undertake a full programme of concert engagements.

As their name suggests, the Britten Singers have a special commitment to British music, which has emerged from the distinctive performing tradition of the BBC Northern Singers. They are particularly famous for their highly individual and eloquent performances, and for their sensitive response to the texts they sing. This is reflected in their imaginative flair for programme building, which may develop a literary, pictorial or emotional idea, follow the theme of a festival, celebrate an occasion, or perhaps explore a style or period of music in depth.

The Singers' extensive repertoire enables them to range very widely in style, period and language from early times to the present day. They constantly pioneer new music and many leading composers have written works specially for them, including Sir William Walton and Dame Elizabeth Maconchy besides contemporary talents like Nicholas Maw, John McCabe, John Joubert, Geoffrey Burgon and Michael Ball. In providing this creative stimulus for the contemporary composer the group in no way overlooks the needs of the ordinary listener. Characteristic comments from composer and listener alike show the breadth of the group's appeal.
