BARRIE CHESHIRE

Tenor

Barrie studied Chemistry at University and was until 1994 Vice Principal of a Sixth Form College. He studied singing with Albert Haskayne and later with Ellis Keeler at The Royal Northern College of Music. He has performed opera, oratorio and lieder over a number of years, mainly in the North of England, and has been fortunate to work with conductors such as: Sir George Solti, Sir Charles Groves and Richard Hickox.

Barrie is a member of The Britten Singers, the now independent form of The BBC Northern Singers, with whom he has recorded and sung at many of the major British and International Festivals. 

His repertoire ranges from Baroque to Contemporary music, and he has sung in first performances of works by Elizabeth Mc.Conchey, Michael Ball and John McCabe. Recent concerts have included, Bach St.Mathew Passion, Schutz Christmas story and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Barrie is senior Lay Clerk at Manchester Cathedral with whom he records regularly, and broadcasts on Radio 4 as a member of the BBC Daily Service Singers.
