John Anthony Cunningham was born in Wigan, Lancashire. He studied at Manchester Polytechnic and for over ten years was a chartered librarian whilst studying singing with John Cameron. He then embarked on a professional singing career with English National Opera, performing and understudying many roles to critical acclaim by the national press.
His contract with ENO has taken him to the USA and Russia and among his many freelance engagements are included guest appearances at the Henley Music and Arts Festival as well as the France - Jersey, Brighton and Sevenoaks Music Festivals.
Anthony has a busy oratorio and recital schedule throughout the country, singing with many choral and music societies in a variety of venues including the South Bank (QEH and Purcell rooms), the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican and most of the main cathedrals in this country. His many prestigious concert performances have taken him to Althorp, Hanbury Hall, Hever Castle, Marble Hill and Hopetoun House (Edinburgh).
As well as opera and oratorio, Anthony also has considerable experience in the light music field. Radio and television appearances include Michael Parkinson's "All Star Secrets", "Harry Enfield's Guide to Opera", and a two-part Radio 2 programme entitled "Love's Old Sweet Song".
Anthony lives in Harrogate with his wife and four young children.
