ADAM CREWE

Counter-tenor

Adam, born in Burnley, Lancashire, first began singing at St Thomas’s Church, Barrowford. At eight years of age, after singing the “Once In Royal” solo verse one Christmas, he was advised to do something about his voice! Taking this in a positive way, he went for singing lessons, spent the next two years training his treble voice and was prompted to try out for Blackburn Cathedral Choir.

Adam joined Blackburn Cathedral very late and despite this progressed through the choir to hold the post of Head Chorister for 2 years, passing all RSCM awards during his time there and discovering an enthusiasm for singing which has never left him. He was at Blackburn Cathedral as a treble during the time of David Cooper and Gordon Stewart when he continued his training and finally left the junior choir, to become a counter-tenor.

He had one of the fastest turn arounds between being a treble and being one of the choirmen. He left one summer as a chorister and returned that September to the main choir as one of the men under Richard Tanner. He also joined Blackburn Cathedral Youth Choir and sang with them for over 4 years.

During his time at Blackburn he took part in radio and television broadcasts including several solos, and sang in a number of countries including Rome, Germany, the Czech Republic and Ireland. After GCSE’s and A Levels he decided upon a career as a teacher in Primary Education which would combine with a career in music.

His training over the years has included a number of choral courses including the RSCM Chetham’s Course to the Eton Choral Course under Ralph Alwood. Having been on these courses several times he also became a Member of the Millennium Youth Choir for several years.

In 2001 he moved to Carlisle to study at St. Martin’s College, and took up a post as a Choral Scholar at Carlisle Cathedral. The following year he progressed to become a Lay Clerk there where he currently sings.

He has completed a degree in History and then subsequently a PGCE in Primary Education and is currently teaching at a school in Cockermouth, Cumbria as well as pursuing a professional singing career. With his history at Blackburn he is often asked back for concerts in Blackburn and tours to other cathedrals as well as his usual commitments with Carlisle Cathedral. In the last 5 years he has been on tour with both choirs to Rome, Dublin, Germany, Paris and Prague.
